What should we plant in afternoon sun?

Question by Nicole: What should we plant in afternoon sun?
We have a garden bed at the front of our house that gets sun in the afternoon but not the morning? What should we plant in it? Veges, herbs and flowers would be especially good as I have a 2 & 1/2 yr old son who is getting into gardening at the moment, so it would be great to have things he can watch grown and even eat!
We are in Sydney, Australia

The specific answer depends on what your growing region is and how many hours of sun you get.

In general, cherry or grape tomatoes fit your general description and are attractive to kids.
Cool weather crops are peas and leaf greens- there is more to lettuce than iceberg and romaine, and you can have a long harvest of leaves until the weather warms too much.
.
Kids like beans which can be grown on a simple trellis, and zucchini which grow prolifically- one or two plants feed a family and the neighbors. Adventurous kids might enjoy radishes. Carrots, especially the short types are neat.

If you find you have an abundant crop of anything, consider sharing with a local food pantry.

Marigolds grow almost anywhere and are easy for a child grow- many French marigolds tolerate a range of watering habits.
Herbs: basil is fun and appeals to kids. There are many varieties.

Geranium plants will do well in that location. They love the bright afternoon sun (although you might have to cover them on the hottest days to prevent leaf burn) and come in so many colors that you can have whatever look you want in your garden.

This website has some great info on Geraniums, including how to grow new plants from cuttings and have yard full of flowers at little to no expense!
